It's 'Bold', boasts 'industrial design', has 'frets' between the rows of its keys on the front. It seems that RIM has gone all Apple on us with the launch of its latest flagship smartphone. The Bold (also known as the 9000) follows major launches from Nokia, Apple and HTC in recent weeks, and it seems to have them all clearly in its sights.

With the iPhone 3G finally available, smartphones are becoming as desirable and ubiquitous as basic mobile phones were a decade ago. It's not enough to be able to send pictures and messages, listen to music and take snaps on your phone – now everyone wants high-speed internet access and the ability to send emails and surf the web as well. BenQ hopes to meet this new demand from the mass market with the E72, a device that looks just like a standard mobile phone but promises a whole lot more.

We were bowled over when we came face to face with the first of Nokia's new smartphones, the Nokia E71 last month. Its combination of usability, battery life and business features saw it elevated to the lofty position of A-List champion, rudely elbowing aside our longstanding favourite, the HTC TyTN II.

The first thing that will strike you with the iPhone 3G is that it is looks very similar to the original. It comes in the same 8GB and 16GB configurations as the previous 2G model and has the same two megapixel camera.

It's no surprise that at GSMA we're seeing a lot of cool things. Since the show is geared toward the worldwide market (Europe in particular), the phones on display are a lot more exciting than the usual sort we see at home. But on the other hand, there's no guarantee that any of the devices will come to North America. Drool as we may, we're also green with envy.

There's really no reason to feel anything but admiration for the team behind the iPhone. After all, Apple has given us the iPod, the iMac and the iBook and has probably done more than any company on the planet to make technology sexy.

The most successful entry-level phones tend to be the ones that don't look cheap. While the spec sheet may be basic, an entry-level handset that boasts slick looks or a well-crafted chassis will be forgiven for the basic 1.3-megapixel camera or lack of 3G. The Sony Ericsson Z555i is aimed at such a market, but will it prove to be an entry-level hit or a low-budget miss?
