It's been a long time coming, but Samsung's debut in the already crowded netbook market is finally here. It's up against some pretty stiff competition, though, so the burning question is whether Samsung's alchemists have used that time to perfect the netbook formula.

It's no secret that the key to the Eee PC 1000H's current A List status is its tremendous six-hour battery life, three times that of its rivals. We know it, you know it, and MSI certainly knows it - hence the belated introduction of the MSI Wind U100-291UK, now with the all-important six-cell battery.

| Sony's newest addition to the VAIO range has been drawing stares from the PC Pro troops since it arrived - largely because it's lipstick red. Whether this is a plus or not is open to interpretation, but you'd better learn to live with it, as the only other colour on offer is an even less appealing brown.

| So here it is. The few leaks about the X300 have only served to heighten the sense of expectation as Lenovo produces - arguably - the most notable laptop of the last five years. And PC Pro has the first full review.

The large glossy black lid is a fingerprint magnet, but keep it clean and it looks great. The interior is all black, and even though it looks a little plasticky it doesn't feel overtly like a budget model.

Before you've even laid eyes on the MacBook Air, the very process of extricating it from its packaging frustrates and excites in a way that few technology purchases can. In typical Apple fashion, every detail has been considered, right down to stage managing the first glimpse of your long-awaited purchase.

We first saw the MacBook Pro over a year ago and the exterior has changed little since Apple first adopted Intel's architecture. But Apple has been busy with the internals, with plenty of worthwhile changes that make the MacBook better value.

Ever since Intel processors became standard across Apple's range, there's been little architectural difference between a MacBook and any given PC laptop. What's more, Mac OS X and Windows coexist happily; there's no issue with sharing files with PC users and most popular (and non-gaming) software is available in a Mac version.

When we recently reviewed Asus's ultraportable U2E, we thought that the premium end of the light laptop market had reached a zenith of luxury: a leather-clad chassis, a keyboard surrounded by brushed metal and a velvet pouch for the machine itself. We've been proved wrong, though, by the arrival of the Asus Lamborghini VX3.

With so much choice in a hugely crowded marketplace, there seems to be a laptop for everyone these days. The Samsung R410, though, sits in a niche that, as of yet, hasn't been saturated - the 14in laptop. It's a surprise as this laptop's workaday 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution provides plenty of desktop space, while ensuring the chassis doesn't get too cumbersome to carry.
