Flip Video Mino

YouTube has completely changed our attitudes toward digital video over the past year or so. Where once shooting and editing motion footage was the preserve of keen amateurs and those with plenty of time on their hands, now just about anyone with a mobile phone can do their You've Been Framed bit.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70

With most compact cameras offering resolutions so ludicrously high that it almost doesn't matter any more, the battleground has moved on to other areas. Chief among these is design.

Flip Ultra

The camcorder market is a crowded and competitive place, so it came as a shock to everyone when the Flip, a small-fry upstart, burst onto the scene late last year in the US and became Amazon's fastest-selling camcorder ever. Now that it's crossed the Atlantic, pundits are expecting similarly high sales in the UK

JVC Everio GZ-HD7

With both Sony and Panasonic already shipping AVCHD products, and Canon due to release models in August, the format is gathering pace. But the latest in the Everio range not only uses MPEG2 as its recording format, it also goes one better than its peers by offering full HD, with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels in each frame. Interlaced fields are still used, but it's a step up from the reduced version of 1080i HD video used by HDV and AVCHD.

Canon HV20

Although HD broadcasting is slow in coming to the UK, HD camcorders are arriving thick and fast, and prices are dropping. Sony had the first few generations of the consumer HDV market to itself, but Canon has now joined in, with the HV20 representing its second foray. However, whereas the HV10 was an upright palmcorder aimed at point-and-shoot consumers, the HV20 has a lot more to attract the higher end.

Olympus E-420

It's easy to lose sight of the smaller players in a digital SLR market so heavily dominated by Canon and Nikon, but there's still healthy competition for third place. Olympus has been canny in giving the E-420 (and its predecessor the E-410) a unique selling point, dubbing it "the world's smallest digital SLR". It's also to be applauded for the price of the new model at a time when the competition is stealthily raising prices.

Canon HF10

The AVCHD format has been taking over the high definition camcorder market - despite the older tape-based HDV still being capable of better image quality. But now Canon has launched a camcorder which could put up a real challenge.

Nikon D300

Consumer-level DSLRs such as the Canon 400D and Nikon D40x offer an excellent route into serious digital photography but, after a certain amount of time, users are likely to outgrow their entry-level equipment. This is where DSLRs like the D300 step in: it's a marked step above the D40x, but any lenses Nikon users have bought will still be compatible.

Sony DSLR-A700

Sony's recent entry into the DSLR market has been greeted fairly positively. Its first effort, the A100, is on our A List, and its second, this A700, hopes to repeat the same trick. But the competition is tough, as its price pitches it squarely against Canon's excellent EOS 40D.

Nikon D60

If the new D60 looks familiar, there's a simple explanation. Hold the old D40X model in one hand and this camera in the other, and aside from the silver model-name badge you'll struggle to tell the difference.
