Asus has rolled out the successor to its Maximus X38 motherboard with the startlingly unimaginative name of Maximus II Formula. The new model uses the P45 chipset which positions Maximus II below the Asus Rampage Formula which uses X48, so you're thoroughly spoilt for choice if you fancy building your PC around a Republic Of Gamers motherboard that supports CrossFire graphics.

| MSI's K9A2 Platinum presents us with a couple of firsts: it's the first motherboard that we've seen that supports AMD's latest AM2+ processors (i.e. the Phenoms) and it's also the first we have seen that uses AMD's latest 790FX chipset. Oh yes, and it also supports Quad CrossFire, should your wallet be up to buying four graphics cards.

Right, were you paying attention at the back? Did you spot the 'E' in the product name for Gigabyte's latest P35 motherboard? No? Well, it's easy to miss at first glance, but as far as Gigabyte is concerned the E stands for something important - Energy.

At first glance, Sapphire's PI-AM2RS780G looks like the perfect board to base an HTPC (Home Theatre PC) around. But digging a little deeper reveals that it is something of a missed opportunity, which is a real shame. As it is, it would make the ideal basis for a quiet, non-gaming (if you use the integrated graphics) everyday PC.

The main developments in P45 from the earlier P35 lie in the PCI Express graphics. P35 could supply 20 lanes of PCI Express with 16 lanes to the primary graphics slot and four lanes to the secondary slot, which meant it wasn't much cop for CrossFire.
