Tsunami eData II 3500

Tsunami's eData II 3500 is a hard disk enclosure that can accommodate two 3½in SATA disks and connect them to your computer using either eSATA or USB. Like Western Digital's My Book, it supports both RAID 0 and 1, making it the first enclosure we've seen to support either.

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II Dual Drive

Western Digital's latest My Book external hard disk consists of two 1TB disks. In RAID 0 mode, the two disks' capacities are combined to give a whopping 2TB of storage, but if one disk fails then you'll lose all your data. In RAID 1 mode, the contents of one disk are mirrored on to the other, so all your data will be safe if a disk fails, but just 1TB of storage will be available. There's a choice of four interfaces: eSATA, USB, FireWire 800 and FireWire 400.

Samsung SpinPoint T

The most obvious attraction of the Samsung SpinPoint T series - and especially the HD501LJ model - is that it's great value. At the time of writing the 500GB SpinPoint T can be had for £51 exc VAT - just 10.2p per Gigabyte, some 20% cheaper than its A List predecessor, the SpinPoint P120.

Verbatim SmartDisk External Hard Disk 640GB

A quick look at the price above suggests the new Verbatim SmartDisk offers more bang per buck than its A-listed rival, the Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition. Whereas the MyBook costs £162, which equates to 16p per gigabyte, Verbatim's costs a mere £62 and, with 640GB of storage, works out at a stunning 9p per gigabyte.

Samsung SpinPoint F DT 1TB

We've long been fans of Samsung's internal drives, and the terabyte-sized SpinPoint F DT - rejoicing in the model numer HD103UJ - is for now the largest drive in the range.

Iomega 2TB Power Pro

There may be plenty of low-cost, high capacity NAS appliances to choose from. But in the quest for value, performance is always a casualty: most desktop boxes struggle to deliver more than 20-25MB/sec transfer rates.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus

The cost of external hard disks has come down a great deal in recent years, and capacities have drastically increased. With prices now lower than 20p per gigabyte they make a great choice as either a backup device or simple storage upgrade.

Plextor MediaX PX-MPM320U

External hard disks should be part of any PC enthusiast's toolkit. They're very cheap these days, allow you to transport large files such as videos and music quickly and easily, carry out swift backups and expand the storage capacity of a laptop or PC without having to get busy with a screwdriver.
